Hey all,
I have a nice piece of Koa I want to use for this knives handle but the block is only 15/16 thick. I drew up the design and then tried to figure out what it would look like from the spine. Normally I like a wider, but thinner handle (helps keep blade straight) but is this too much? I think most of the handle is ok but the butt seems narrow.

Thanks

If you can't decide, get a piece of cheap wood such a Spruce and cut it to 11/16" thich then make a test handle out of it. If you find it suitable, your problem is solved. If it isn't suitable, you have a choice to make; choose a different handle block, split the block and insert a spacer out of different wood or go with a full tang knife and use the thickness of the tang to make the handle wider.

I am sure that was a typo and he meant 15/16".

The addition of a spacer adds both a asthetic look and extra thickness. I have done it using ebony and like the black "spine" stripe it gives. It also makes fitting a curved tang easy, as you can cut the slot in the spacer piece to fit the tang beforehand.

To my eye 15/16 is plenty to work with in that dimension. I would add much more shape into the other dimension.
