Handle Finish

Hmmm.... I put a simple oil on for my wooden handle finish. Nothing special. Well it kinda made a few marks on the knife where it touches.....buffed a bit but it was not the easiest to get off. What kinda finishes for wooden handles do you guys use?

I saw this stuff, Renessance wax.....any good for handles....?

Howdy There..!
I use Tru-oil for gun stocks to finish my wooden handles and get a very good finish with it. I do tape off any of the finished metal as to prevent any from getting on it. It takes a few coat to get a good build up, but it is worth the time. Give it a try and good luck..!

"Possum"

For kitchen knives you can't beat salad bowl finish by behlens. Its FDA approved and will make unstabilized wood stand up to the dishwasher regularly (not reccomended but my mom does it anyway

Its not quite tough enough for folders as it will wear off in your pocket over time. Same probably goes for heavy use knives like hunters, skinners and utility knives.
One thing I didn't like was to put on thin coats of epoxy. I tried it with eaxtra slow curing epoxy that was supposed to be good for tings like sheeting model air plane wings. I ended up with a rubbery covering that was always a litle sticky to the touch and looked bad. It made a nice peice of walnut look like runner

I've got some other stuff to try called ARM R SEAL, thats supposed to be tough. Its a mix of pure urethane and tung oil. I'll try and post how it works if I ever get around to using it. Been meaning to for a long time.

It'll feel better when it stops hurting.

I've used Watco penetrating oil finish for years and never had a problem. It has a very high tung oil content so it seals well after it has cured. Possum is right. I never use less than five applications and often more. I like that natural hand rubbed look. As far as the wax, something like that will look good on stabilized wood. Just don't use it alone on any kind of natural material that has not been stabilized or adequately sealed. That's an invitation to a cracked handle.
