Handle fix for the 1000th time

we've read it a thousand times.. but now I need help on a 20" Villager. The wood handle cracked a bit so I filled the crack with wood glue. A little later the Khuk worked a tiny, tiny bit loose in the handle. The blade moves in the handle. I have small boys around and don't want to take a chance on the blade flying out some day.

How do I pin the handle, if that's the best fix? I don't understand the theory of why pinning works.

1/8" diameter brass pin. What I want to know is; how do I know I am drilling though the middle of the tang, and not putting a hole in the side of it?

I believe that if you drill through the center of the handle about 1/4" back from the bolster you will center the pin. The tang is wider there then tapers down and only goes part way through the handle on villager models.

Of course, I may be wrong. In that case, ignore the advice above. :D

I'm thinking he has an HI village model. he says the tang goes through brass at the end of the handle.

If you have a better idea than mine to find the center of the tang let us know. I would mark a center of the steel at the bolster and use a piece of tape from the center at the bolster to the center of the peened portion of the tang and you should have a pretty much centered line.

You are probably right about not going back very far from the bolster. In any case I would not go more than an inch back.:)

Munk: In addition to pinning, ( excellent idea ) I would suggest filing down the steel where it has been mushroomed into the keeper, prying off the keeper and the buttcap. Go ahead and drill just behind the boister as suggested. But take a look down inside the grip and see if you can 1)
set another pin toward the back, and 2) pour more goop into the handle. Non-gel superglue to melt and meld with the laha, or even epoxy if there's room. Then all you need to do is remove a bit of wood from under the buttplate ( or peen the tang to stretch it out ) so you can re-place the buttcap and keeper then re-peen over the keeper.

Munk,
I'll remove the handle, epoxy and repeen the tang for $30+shipping.
Let me know if you are interested.
God Bless.

Send $100 to Lama Jigme for the "X-ray Vision" Puja. :D  :p

If you drill down an inch below the bolster in center of the handle fore and aft you can't miss.

..Uh, I think maybe the pin I got from the weldor down the street is too small; it's about as big around as the ink cartridge to a throw away bic pen. That the right size for a pin? Its a tad less than an 1/8"

The hole you drill and the pin have to be a tight fit. If you have a mic and can match a drill to the pin you're ok.

munk,

If I didn't screw up, you should be getting a photo of a disasembled GRS in your e-mail. Thanks to ART for being kind enough to snap a few photos while he was working on it. (I'd post it for everyone to see but I haven't bothered to figure out using the little bit of web space my ISP provides.)

I got it, Firkin. Art sure is a big help. WE have Sisco and Art around here and I'm certain we can't give them enough of our support.

Repairing a khuk brings you closer to it...as if munk had a hand in the manufacture. "Well, yes sir, yes siree," Munk tells a small crowd of onlookers, "Sher made the blade, but I pinned the handle."

I pinned it. Came out OK, except the pin mushroomed into a half moon on one side and a slight oblong on the other.

First drill bit I used just spun against the metal. I put another bit in and felt this one doing something.

Thanks for the help.
I waited until my wife came home because she had the only hammer with a ball peen end. I tried both the flat and round to hit the pin.
Can't say I've figured it out yet.

Just Right; do you leave the tang peened on and screw the cap tighter? I tapped the tang end a few times as the butt plate was just a little loose.

I guess you have the knife fixed. The odd shapes you got and the bows and other odd shapes is usually caused because you might have gotten in a bit of a hurry and, just a bit too much force with the hammer. Any way if it works and the handle isn't coming off, it sounds like all is well.:) :D
