Handle for a filet knife...

Hi folks,

I've got a handle question for the experts? I'm getting close to finishing a filet knife and
need some advise on how to attach a handle. The tang has been trimmed down and I
was thinking about sandwiching a couple of piece of canvas micarta on to the tang.
I was going to route out a slot on each pieve of micarta and then use some corby
bolts to attach them to the tang. The problem is the tang is about 3/4 the length
of the handle and about 1/3 the height. My question: can I route out the handle
and attach it, as mentioned, and not use a guard?

Hope this makes sense.

Many thanks,

Yep, and you don't need a guard. I have used micarta for handles with no guards or bolsters. The handles are holding up just fine, micarta is tough stuff.

So, I would be okay even with the micarta scales being about 2xs the
size of the tang? In other words, the tang, except for the top that is exposed,
behind the blade spine, will be sandwiched in on the sides and bottom, with the micarta.

I just wanted to make sure I was explicit enough in my description.

Thanks again,
Dana

That will work fine.It is a 1/2 tang, similar to a lot of import knives. It works OK.Fitting the inlet is a bit tricky,so go slow.A little flair to the blade end of the handle will provide a sort of built in bolster.

for the help. I'll proceed now that I have all my conerns addressed.
