Few months ago or so I was lucky enough to get my hands on a 12" UBE, which is a fantastic knife i urge you all to get. Keeps the functionality of most of the khuks while being in a more manageable of a size.

Anyway, the first batch of them (and potentially later ones) had unfortunately small handles - at least to me.

I have never made a knife handle, and really have no where to begin. I don't even know how to take off the existing handle. However, in it's present state the handle is too small for me to be able to use (back of it digs into the palm of my hand). I'm thinking of popping the butt cap (?) off the bank and simply sanding down the wood, and changing the cap, or possibly extending the handle and reattaching the cap depending how the size works.... thoughts and help?

try sanding the part that digs in,a more rounded handle might be all that is necessary(caps can be sanded to remove pointy edges most times)

First of all, RR, thanks for the design:)

Generally speaking, if you want to remove the handle, you can grind off the peen, then boil the handle until the laha inside melts. Then quickly, you can wrench off the handle material (before the laha sets back up). A little scrubbing and sanding should get most of the sticky stuff off.

Once you mod the handle or craft another one, you can reset it with some epoxy from a hardware store and re-peen the tang over the keeper.

Nagod,

The problem is that the handle, like most of the Khuks (pretty much all of them actually) is flared at the end to prevent it from flying out of your hand when chopping. It's the entire end of the knife, including the metal butt cap that are digging into the plam about 3/4" in.

Therefore, i don't think sanding will work - even if i did sand it down it would still be a touch on the short side. So far i've been cheating my hand up, but that's definitely not going to work when it comes time to chop.
