OK, Thanks to How the ESEE people handled the knife throwing incident, I was forced to purchase a new ESEE 6 and it is currently on it's way. (My first ESEE)

I noticed the several mods to the handle including dying (Is that how you spell it?) and filing or changing the handle to make the grips more tactile. I looked at every page of the photo album and wondered.

If I dye them black, and then file or cut the grip as shown in the threads of others, Will the cut out areas be black or the OD OEM color? Almost like a tiger stripe?

One would guess that it depends on how far into the handles the die is absorbed and far far down your plan to file.

If you dye them first then file your pattern, the notches you filed will not be black.

I have seen some really nice work on filing the micarta to give more grip . BUT bear this in mind when you do it; Creating any hard ridges or sharp areas on the handle can cause hotspots or blisters if you use the knife a LOT during the course of a day to do work. Some guys may have palms like aligator hide but mine tend to break down after a couple of hours if there is a hard ridge rubbing a finger or palm area. This is especially true if there is water involved because water causes the skin to lose it's integrity and become mush and more susceptible to breaking down into blisters.

I would also not recommend filing any ridges into the knife handles. It messes up the aerodynamics when you throw them :D

^^Thats funny

RC1254- I saw yours and like the black handles so I was copying you.

This is my first ESEE and I do not know how grippy the handle feels to begin with. I don't even know if I am going to dye it yet, I'm just excited and kicking some ideas around in my head.

i did some dremel work on one of my 6's i didnt leave any sharp edges and its very grippy and comfortable to work with.

eventually i wore most of the finish off and just stripped the rest and dyed the scales and made a leather sheath while i was at it.

I'm just gonna say it...

CricketDave is coolest guy on this forum, period.

Those grips look really good. So if i dyed it before hand then dremeled it like you, The cut outs would be much lighter?

yes it would leave the original color where you dremel away material. one thing to keep in mind if you dye them be careful of the liner if you put the scales in boiling water which is one way recomended on the dye package they will swell up and not fit right anymore. i used usmc black leather dye for mine and just painted the dye on and let dry, then sprayed a coat of sealant on it.
