This stuff is fun and addicting.
The usual household tools were used. Including a little vise that clamps onto my bench top.
The little files came from home depot and weren't expensive at all.
I did use my Craftsman table top drill press to start the guard slot and the pin hole in the butt cap.
You could use a hand drill for this as well.
I hand filed the brass from bar stock. It goes slow and easy. Kind of like the Zen sharpening thing ;)
Drilled the stag with my hand drill. A little from each end.

I highly recommend getting some bare blades and trying this yourself :D

Nice! I love that stag.... especially the contrast in colors.
How much did that blade set you back ? Looks like s fun little project.

Thank you. I bought the stag at the spring knife show here in NYC.
The blade wasn't expensive at all. IIRC the stag cost more.
Check under Norwegian knives at Ragnar's place.

I must meditate on that to overcome my personal viparinama-dukkha when smithing.... You are truly one with the bevels and finish. Excellent work.

That is gorgeous! Nice job!

How does the butt cap/plate attach? You mentioned a pin hole....

Dang it, now I gotta go and buy some more blades...

Sodak, I chickened out on peening the tang over the brass.
I saw this method in Blade Magazine so I figured I'd give it a shot.
I drilled a 1/8" hole in the butt cap. Then I held it in place on the stag, marked the spot and drilled a blind hole the next size larger in the stag.
1/8" brass rod was a snug fin in the brass and had a little bit of room for epoxy in the stag. The pin goes thru the cap and about 1/8"-3/16" into the stag.
After I glued the whole thing together I filed the pin down and sanded it flush.
The tang of the knife comes within a 1/16" of the butt cap too.

Bravo Wally!

Very nicely done, you have a beautiful piece of stag and turned into something you can be proud of.

Thanx PhilL,
From a confessed stagaholic that means alot :D
Now for the leather ;)
