I turned up an old carpenter's half hatchet head moving some dirt around a week or so ago.

After some wire brushing and a vinegar soak it cleaned up acceptably for the price.

I've filed the edge down past the pitting, I'd say the temper is a bit on the soft side. It's ready to hang, what is a good length of handle for a hatchet of this type? Treat it like a claw hammer or should it go longer?

Had the same exact thing happen to me, got the half hatchet right here on my desk. Same shape and everything.

However long you like it really. 12-16 is about what I like. I had a hawk with a 19" handle and hated it. It's just personal preference.
