Handle length for beginning thrower?

Hi,
I just purchased a couple of Cold Steel Frontier tomahawks. I don't have much
experience throwing. The handles that came with it are 22 inches in length.
I was watching Avery Pierce throwing and he recommends about 17-18 inches in
length.
I was wondering if I should cut a few inches of wood off? Any help would be
much appreciated. Thanks.

I really don't want to be throwing at long distances and really don't have any idea
what length would be a good all around point to start. :)

Thanks Robin. I'll start throwing with that length and see how I do. I just was wondering if they came long like that so you can trim
them to what you like which I assume might have some truth to it.

I was also wondering when they measure a haft do they take the measurement from "tip to bottom of the actual wood", "bottom of the
head to the tip of the wood" or "top of the head to bottom of wood" to determine length? Why I ask is that a lot of times the haft sits
an inch or so above the top of the head. Where is say an 18 inch haft actually measured?

Hey Sean
I have hawks with hafts from 17 inches total length to 24 inches total. To be honest I realy don't find a big difference at all. Distance to the target is the only critical measurement when throwing "average weight" hawks IMO. The trailhawk is a great thrower and my overall favourite of all the CS hawks.

Best regards

Robin

in answer to your other question - 13 feet or about 5 long paces from the target is a good starting point.
