I have a piece of M4 24"x1.5"x.15 and Im trying to decide how long I should make the handle. Should I go for something that your able to use two hands with or just one?

Sounds like a one hand...

These being 2 handed..

There are a lot of other factors to consider; like how long a blade your planning on mounting it on, how much does it weigh, and where do you plan on having the balance point land? For my 2 cents I prefer one handed as the two handed grips just get in the way in my opinion

Stick with 1 hand. 17-18" blade and ~7" for the handle is a good length, in my opinion. Want it to be balanced, yet still retain enough length to be a sword.

I agree. A 7" handle gives you a roomy one hand grip, and sufficient length for a 2 hand grip if needed (see Swamp Rat rucki picture below) but more importantly, the weight in the handle will make the blade much more lively than something like a 19-20" blade with a 4-5" handle.

You could always cut it in half and make 2 very nice choppers out of it.

Depending on the width of the stock, and your layout, you could probably get 2 very nifty 10"-12" choppers out of it

24" is a good length though. I've made several blades that length, and love them all. I'd do a Han jian-style sword with that piece of metal in your place. Or make a bunch of smaller blades. Feels like a while since I've made a knife, and not a short sword, actually. Good thing I have a couple drawn up.

Another vote for 1 handed, I much the prefer a one handed weapon especially when it comes to blades. From my experience I can cut a lot better and seemingly with more power and accuracy with one hand. It might come from boxing training or the dumbell and kettlebell training. I'm not sure but I much prefer using a one handed piece. I do think however that my coldsteel warhammer is excellent in two handed grip.

Looks like its going to be one handed. I can still change it to two handed, even though Ive profiled it already, it probably wont change.
