Handle Material Comparison Question.

Like to know about the differing types of handle material for fixed camper knife.

What is best. What should I avoid? Micarta the best? G-10? Others? Why? Why not? Especially comparisons, links, general comments, etc.

Purpose: Camping. Would also like a handle material to last many years.

Thanks.

my preference for a camp knife is canvas micarta.

it is slightly absorbant, so sweaty hands wont hinder grip too badly. though it will dry quickly even if submerged in water.

very tough, fire resistant, comfy.

Hey Guys..

Cambridgeguy..

Welcome to the mighty BF.com

Generally G10 and Micarta in it's many different forms are the industry standard for Hard use long lasting handle material..

Carbon fibeer is also used quite a bit..
Very tough, however can be slippery...

The G10/Micrata will last the lifetime of the knife without fear of cracking or falling apart...

Where are you from BTW ??

There is no "best" as a lot depends on personal preference of what "feels best" to each individual. Micarta, G10, Phenolic. Good stuff all. Some folks don't like FRN. If it is well done, I don't have a problem with it. That goes for the other materials, too. You have to go beyond just the materials to the way they have been implemented into the design. Shucks there's a lot to be said for the old leather washer handles on the KaBars. They have stood up really well to a lot of abuse over the years.

I think handle material is the least of your worries if you buy from a good maker.

i dont buy FRN at all anymore, just looks "cheap" to me, for handles i prefer ti, micarta, G10 or carbon fibre myself.

This is just my preference, but the FB I use in the woods is green canvas micarta on a Chase Axinn T-Bolt. I am constantly amazed at how grippy it is with wet hands and how comfortable it is to hold.

For folders, I prefer FRN for my warehouse work knife because of it's impact resistance. Otherwise, grippy, black G-10 gets my vote (and the most pocket time) for an EDC folder.

The only things I don't carry, even though I buy them, are metal-handled knives.
