Maybe someone can help clear this up for me; I'm trying to figure out exactly what this is:

Any ideas?

I've got black paper on my SJLE, it looks very smooth in comparison to these slabs. I initially thought it was black paper as well but because of the texture I can't help but wonder if it isn't a coated micarta, like what they did with the Tanker A's snakeskin handles...

Top right, the snakeskin has some sort of resin coating:

I'm just wondering if that's what I'm seeing here...?

I think its a mineral oiled up black canvas micarta.

I would almost bet money on it........almost!!!

Well it has a weave of sorts so I don't think it's black paper either.

You can make out some color along the edges but I don't think it's a snake skin, which leaves the darkest black linen I've seen or someone took shoe polish or something of the sort to it.

In short I don't know but the pix are great.

It'll be interesting to see the answer.

Good luck.

You may have something there, the weave is coarser then linen and I'm couldn't even say if Busses ever used linen.

*Oh yeah, they've used linen. :o

Let's start here - what knife is that. I don't have my NICK in front of me, but that doesn't look right for an XXXL. At least from there we could narrow it down. Thin NICK's had paper, XXXL's had black canvas. That aint' no thinny, if it is a NICK.

It's my XXXNick that I have listed, we can't figure it out and I don't want to guess.

Who oiled it up? Maybe they can shed some light on it?

Dennis in MA, I didn't realize it was only the Thin Nicks that came in black paper. That actually pretty much sums everything up for me.

Liu Kang has this beauty listed on the exchange and was kind enough to send over some additional glamour shots for me to oogle while I tried to decide if this was my next knife or not.

I was really hoping to grab a XXXNick in black paper but I'm guessing that config doesn't exist or is exceedingly rare.

Sucks for me.

from the photo's that looks like a carbon fiber weave pattern, but that would have to be a very custom handle for that to be the case. g10 would be the same case.

it's probably that it's the standard black canvas scales that came with the xxl nick's, just heavily oiled. Do they have an iridescent square weave pattern (like a reed matt), or is it a regular single strand woven pattern (like denim, but with smaller strands)?

yes, I did lightly oil them, they seem to show up better in pict with the true colors when they have a bit of oil on them. I believe they have the normal handles which would have to be the black canvas scales.

Yep. Oiled black canvas micarta. Great blade. Wish the handle was a bit htickerer. As Skunk (or Ducci - I forget which) has said many times, it's the best camp blade out there. Thick yet b/c of configuration can handle cooking and chopping chores equally as well. Just too thin for my hand to be doin choppin.

Love my NICK for kitchen work.

My Black Paper show no sign of a weave. It has to be Black (?) Micarta.

EDIT: My Linen Micarta don't show a weave like that either. I think they may be Canvas Micarta. In order to be sure you should post a picture with the mineral oil washed off.

I hope you still have all four of those. That is quite a nice set of snakeskin there.

I actually just sold the snakeskin HOGFSH a few weeks ago. I'm keeping the MOASH.

It was a tough call letting the DC / Snakeskin HOGFSH go as it's easily one of the most fine / mint Busse knives I've ever owned. The lucky buyer has one hell of a knife on his hands!:thumbup::thumbup:
