What is the safest method of removing the rivets from stag handle material on a hunting knife? To drill the rivets out would require a center punch, but the impact could damage the stag material. These handles are to be used on another knife frame.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for any consideration.

I'm not an expert but I would say that drilling the rivets out is the only way to remove the handle. Just be careful not to drill into the exsisting handle. It's not hard to do if you take your time I have never messed up a handle ( In a few hundred trys)that was to be replaced just use a bit that will be small enough to remove the handle and large enough to to remove the rivet I would say a 1/8" bit For rivets 1/4" or larger)should do it for you. And yes you can use a center punch to mark the center of the rivet if you feel you have to control the bit.

To protect the stag when center punching, you might back up just the rivet with a larger flat punch behind it? I think that's what I'd try first anyway. Good luck!

You could use a little dremmel grinding wheel and grind the head off and pop the washer off. Assuming you mean real rivets and not pins peened even with the stag.
