I have an unusual request, that being a small hunter with scales of something gray in color. I am a loss about the gray scales. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any ideas.

Not a particularly "high class" handle material, but black & silver dymondwood is shades of dark grey. Or else maybe you could dye some bone?

Sandblasted black canvas micarta is pretty gray in appearance.

Edited: nevermind. thinking about it, hand oils make it "blacker" with use.

Balck Micarta or one of the other phenolic based composits, looks pretty grey when finished with a 120grit or coarser belt. It will however get darker when wet or oily.

You can get gray/black G10 thru Sheffield knifemakers supply.

I have some light gray G10...but it isnt all that pretty.

Gray must be this guy's favorite color or something. When I get around to making the blade (D2 requested), I will check with Sheffields. Thanks

What about Silver Vine? Here is one of my knives in Silver Vine, it is the only handle material that I've used that has greys in it. Of course there are other shades as well but it is pretty cool stuff none the less.

You can buy it at galleryhardwoods.com. It is stabilized.

Sean, thanks for the info on Silver Vine. I looked at the website, but didn't see any so I sent an email to them.

Ya I should have mentioned that you would have to email him about it, his site is more guitar oriented. If you are going to the Vegas show in Feb. he'll be there or at least should be.

Giraffe would also be a good choice. I think the website for them in the US is giraffebone.com. You'll have to email them as well with your request but they'll most likely have some that is grey in colour.

Good luck,
Sean

It occured to me that I had overlooked one of the obvious choices for grey handle material, Corian, or one of the other composit kitchen countertop materials. They come in a wide variety of colors, polish up like glass and make very nice grips. Some brands are tougher than others, but if you shy away from sharp edges you shouldn't have any problems.
The other idea I had was Hardybacker. It is a concreet based underlayment used for ceramic tile floors. I never tried it for grips, but if grey is what you are looking for, this stuff fits the bill!

Enjoy!

I think the Giraffe Bone would probably push the price a little farther than this guy wants to spend. Thanks for all the replies and ideas.
