I am having a small fixed blade knife custom made, and can't decide on the best handle material. I like the looks of Stag Horn, but am unsure about its durability and comfort. The knife will be used mostly for fishing and camping trips and will not be abused, but I want a material that is tough enough that it won't crack if it drops on a rock or something.

Has anyone used a Stag Horn handle? Is it comfortable? How durable is it compared to micarta?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Micarta is virtually indestructible. Stag will be subject to environmental factors, but should prove very durable under conditions of normal use and care. Under your stipulated conditions, the stag should work.

You want the stag epoxied to the tang, not just pinned on, otherwise you might lose part of it when dropped on a rock. Stag is reasonably durable and provides a low-slip gripping surface. Micarta is durable, but rather smooth.

Thanks for all your help! That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. It looks like stag is the way to go for me.

Stag is very comfortable and reasonably durable. A problem that you may find is in the cost of stag. India no longer allows Sambar Stag to be exported. This means that the current stock is the last of it. The price of Sambar Stag has increased in the last few months.

Stag, stag, stag!!!!!

Unless you need 100% reliability for eternity, go with the far more sensory pleasing stag.

There's nothing like it.
Well, maybe bone?!?!?

Stag, by all means...and if you treat it as you describe...you might get to hand it down. George is right, it will not last forever, but I have seen knives close to 100 years old that still look good and handle well.
