Handle Materials

I'm thinking about putting some handle scales on one of my throwing knives. Is leather my only option here? I don't really like the look of cord-wrapped handles, and I'll do leather if that's my only option, but can any other material stand up to the abuse? Would it help if I was to make the scales slightly smaller than the tang, leaving a metal rim around them to hopefully take the shock of messed up throws better? Thanks in advance for all the help.

handles are IMO not really neccessary, but if you want them anyway - do yourself a favour by using something cheap and easily replaceable.
hitting with the handle is not the only problem, when you get some conistency you will often hit the handle of the first with the second knife.
