Handle Pins

I'm working on my first Busse project and " yes pics. will follow " I need to reinstall the handle slabs. I know the pins are in 1/4" diameter, but how long do I cut them ? I'm going to flair them with screw heads and ball bearings. I also have access to .035 1/4" SS 316L tubing is this OK to use or should I get something made for it ?
