To those of you with both...which do you prefer? The classic resiprene C of the swamp or the micarta? I feel like more and more the swamp is going to micarta.....

Is it better functionaly or just look better?

Also, I wonder if this crazy scrap yard knives is going keep the focus on resiprene C. Don't know I saw wrong but it seemed all the handles were resiprene...

I haven't handled either but it looks to me like Res C is more comfortable, in which case I favor it.

I have handled both, and Resiprene C is by farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr the more comfortable of the two... ;)

What I anticipate is the Swamp will be ONLY micarta, while the new "Scrap Yard Knives" will utilize the left over Res-c handles.

Hi Bladelugger,

Here's my take on it (schizophrenic, I know)...

For a dedicated chopper, like the Battle Rat, I totally prefer the resiprene. Super comfortable.

For my all 'rounders, I like the confidence of micarta -- may just be a mental thing, but I tend to hold back when beating on the resiprene handle.

I think that the resiprene on the Howling Rat makes it the most blade for its weight and I really like that. Micarta on the smaller blades generally makes the handle heavier than the blade which I don't prefer, though I'd never get rid of my Heavy Duty and will be first in line for a tactical howler ;)

So while I've got plenty of preferences which tend to sway to both sides of the fence, the obvious choice is to get both :D. Hope this helps.

Actually, there is a bit of a parlor trick you can play, BL. Simply type the words "Tac Howler" in either BF or the Swamp and, within 15 minutes, 360 appears like magic.

It's actually quite entertaining!

But to add my two cents to your question, if I had to choose only one, it would be micarta. Since I don't have to stick with only one, a Battle Rat has been my camping knife the last few trips and my never-to-be-replaced Howling Rat is in my EDC bag. If I had to grab one to do it all and run with it? Currently it would be my HH FSH. However, the Res-c is really comfortable to use. Micarta feels more durable and the RW micarta grip has more grip options than the Rec C CT/BR grip.

Beyond materials, a lot of the diversity of opinion includes discussion on which grip fits your hand the best.

For me?
Fine work - Mudder grip Bog Dog
Small EDC - Howling Rat
Large Blade Grips - The Busse Fusion/SF Mag grips.

Of all the rec-c & micarta Wauseon blades, I think the RW/RM has the most versatile grips. Have fun discovering which works best for you!!

I only own a HR but a friend of mine has a fair collection of Busse's.

I really like the Res-C for extended/heavy use but for fine work the Micarta works well.

What I'd like to see is a Busse BM-e with Res-C. That would be the end-all-be-all of choppers. A little more curve to the BR grip and its there.
