Hey guys.

I'm probably asking something that has been asked a million times before, but can someone tell me what the pros and cons are regarding micarta and g10?

whats your preference and why?

Is there anything that puts you off one or the other?

Cheers guys

Micarta because it's grippier AND more comfortable. It doesn't have to be cut with as aggressive a grip to be just as or more grippy than G-10. Plus it's more durable. Micarta is also lighter than G-10.

On a user I prefer canvas Micarta but if you wear gloves, like cutting in heavy brush like I do, G-10 works just as well.

For me, micarta has a better feel in the hand, but tends to look dull at first. G10 looks great, with sharper colors and pattern definition, but feels cold somehow, and doesn't improve with use to the degree that micarta does. Micarta gets better and better looking the more you use it and mess around with it. Both are nice. I tend to lean towards micarta as being nicer. It seems to be more an organic material, if that makes sense, even though it is mostly synthetic.

I do prefer linen micarta over canvas, though. And if paper were still available, I bet I would really, really like that.

G-10 is a super tough material, but I don't like it near as much as micarta.

Micarta is lighter, grips better and just has a great feel to it. Smooth G-10 feels OK but can be slick.

Micarta wins by a large margin in my book.

Wish they still made the Black Paper, it might not be as stong as the others but it looked and felt sooo good.

My preferences...

Micarta, Micarta, Micarta!!!
If it's canvas, I prefer hand shaped. It's more comfortable and it's grippy enough. If it's Linen Micarta... I like the Busse patterns

G-10 looks nice, but it's heavy, too slippery if hand shaped, and too coarse if it's got the patterns.

Just my 2 cents. :D

Okay, I'll admit it. I prefer g10 to micarta, but I do like micarta as well. For some reason, g10 just FEELS more durable to me. Maybe it is the weight. Anyway, I like it.

Asthetically, I like the G10 "look" better. Not really a fan of the dull color of the micarta and haven't had a chance to use any micarta enough to give it the shine that some around here have.

For users? Res-C :D

I like G10... it has a nice crisp feel to it, a nice clink when you tap it, and the colors POP.

Do you have a citation to back that up? I am pretty certain that G10 is stronger than micarta, although it may be a matter of nitpicking between abrasion resistance and tensile strength.

I like the micarta better. As stated it is lighter, has a better grip, and breaks in nicely. The G10 is really a heavy material and you can feel it when you pick up the knife. Slicker feel to it as well so I suspect a slick substance like blood would make your knife into a infislipper...Good thing they make both for us!!!!!

I prefer G-10. Looks better, and its colors are more pure, more accurate. Orange G-10 is my favorite for hunting knives because I don't lose it when I lay it on the ground while field dressing. I don't find that it's that much more slippery than micarta when wet either, especially with busse knives since they're textured.

Micarta. Like many have said, G10 feels very slick to me. I buy knives to use, and if I'm not comfortable with the handle then it's not doing me much good. I'd even go so far as to say I hate G10 and won't buy another knife with it. That has good and bad points, the bad being a lot of the Ganza knives are G10 so I miss out on them. The good part is I save money for something else.

Micarta all the way. G10 looks good...but is slicker and tends to hide the color.

I can't remember exactly where I heard that, but it was a reliable source or I would have discarded it....I'll hunt around and try to remember. Personally that's been confirmed with my own knives...my OJ warden's G-10 Chipped just from insertion into a tight kydex...I've dropped my micarta knives onto rocks, the floor, and concrete before with nothing but slight marks and a few scratches but no chipping or chunks. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems as though G-10 is more prone to being brittle and chipping/chunking than micarta is. I don't really see any scratches on my G-10 wheras I do on my micarta so I dunno :p
