Handle question for Randall Owners

I'm ordering a Randall No. with leather handles (I know micarta is more durable and wood prettier but I like the leather). Anyone have an opinion as to whether the standard shape or the crows beak shaped handle is better or offers more control?

Loki,

If you want a high level of control, I'd also consider the full-finger grip, single-finger grip, stag, or maybe a #25 handle. Of course the handle should be consistent with the model you are considering, but it's hard to beat the full finger grip for control.

Which model are you ordering?

A note of caution on full finger grips: they apparently vary from knife to knife. I examined some that fit my hand well, but I've seen some where the finger grips are too widely spaced. It's not unusable, but it is not ideal either.

In micarta, I like the border patrol grip. I have a Model 5 with a standard leather grip and it seems fine. The crow's beak would probably be more secure, but when do you really wail away with the blade? The Model 22 with crow's beak handle in micarta is homely, but it is comfy in the hand.

Gee - forgot to tell which model I was ordering - a Number One with 8" O-1 blade. I've seen the No.1 with crows beak handle and liked the look.

I have a number one with a burgandy micarta comando handle and it is bad to the bone.

Okay.....The #1. Yeah, I have a couple of those. While the stag on my 8 incher looks awesome, I'd really have to suggest considering a micarta handle with the single-finger grip option, as on a smaller #1 I own.

It has a great look, is comfortable in the hand in a variety of grips, and acts almost like a sub-hilt. No real for a crow's beak on this style.

I think if you opt for the Leather you are going to be limited in your handle shape selection. A Commando or Border Patrol shaped handle in leather looks good and has a great grip but for a true user I would also recommend the Micarta Single Finger Grip handle. Just doesn't fatigue your hand/grip as much.

Either way, Randalls are great!!
