I recently bought a Condor Woodworker axe. The handle is VERY fat for my hand. How much would it reduce its strength if i sanded some down where my hand would be ? If this is a stupid question, i apologize in advance. Is it recommended or not ?

Thanks :D

Most new axe handles are too fat. With a small axe like that I'd be comfortable slimming it down to 3/4" wide, maybe even 11/16".

You should make that handle more comfortable for you. If it's too large, you will have trouble holding on when your hands get tired, tired from having to grip that fat a$$ handle. I've held these in a store, and they were way too thick, you're on the right track by thinning the handle.

Yup! You can slim it right down no problem. I agree with Square_peg regarding dimensions. Ultimately just thin it so it's comfortable for extended use and you'll be good to go.

I sold just the head to a Woodworker at one point because the buyer intended to rehaft it on a longer handle and I saved the handle from it. It's my noggin' bonker for culling meat rabbits for processing. :D

FortyTwo,

A couple more questions:

How does the 1045 steel hold up?

And do you have a brick and mortar store if I am ever up in Maine?

Thanks,

John

In my experience it holds up just fine. Is it a Wetterlings or a GB? Nope! But is it a hardware store axe? Not that either. Good solid performance right in the middle of the range. Suits a working axe well enough. :)

No brick and mortar store at the moment. We're strictly an online establishment for now--who knows what the future may bring, though! :p

I'll vouch for the customer service - as good as it gets.

ETA: Granted that there's always room for improvement...for example, you could offer a free machete with every axe order! ;) Just joking, seriously though...great, fast service.
