I just got my first HI knife in the mail on tuesday, this thing is a beast, I am enjoying it very much. I got the villager from the 9/14 dotd. I had a question about the handles, how are they meant to fit the hand? Mine has a raised ring about two thirds of the way down the handle below the carving. Where is this supposed to hit the hand? It hits me right in the middle of the ring finger which I found irritating after a bit of use. I assume my hands are too big and it is meant to be between a couple of fingers. It is not a problem for me since I bought this as a workhorse to use around the property, not to sit there and look pretty(although it does a fine job of that as well). I am just gonna sand it down a bit.

you gets to mess wit it.

Then, you become addicted to messin' with 'em.

Then, you buy truoil or some such stuff.

Then, you get addicted to THAT.

Then, you get initiated into the Woodchucks Lodge.

Welcome.

Read the safety thread, please.

15" Villager Pen? or the 20.5" Villager Chitlangi?

Either way, the rings on those are to go between your fourth and pinky fingers during normal use - which may require you to choke up a bit - and then between fingers 3 & 4 only when needing serious chopping/leverage.

It's quite normal to have some of the bolster in your hand when using a khukuri.

I got the 20.5 incher. The choked up grip works fine but I could use a little more room between the ring and butt. I will experiment and see if I can find a grip that works before I defile it. It is a nice hunk of metal, I was gonna buy a nice hand axe for working around here but this is so much more fun and versatile.

go ahead and round it over with a file or sandpaper - I've done it with mine...as have many others.

If you go that route, then go ahead and sand the whole handle smooth and reapply a new finish. Oila...customized kukri. ;)

Welcome.

Modding these is very fun, and addictive as mentioned before. I've filed down the ring on handles where it is too big. Or, I've removed it if its just placed wrong for my hand. I try to avoid removing it though, as it serves as an index, much like the dots on your keyboard. So that if your hand is slipping up the handle the ring will let you know before the edge does. But on some handles the ring is just not going to work for me, so I removed it and have a smooth handle.

Uh oh. The HIKV bug is sinking its teeth into another one.;) This won't be your last khuk, son. The Chitlangi was a good choice. A 20 - 22 incher is definitely on my wish list.

Welcome to the fold. This is a good place to hang out. Grab a pint and come sit by the fire.

For those of you who sand the rings off, don't you worry about or have trouble with your hand slipping up on the blade. I know that you don't normally use a stabbing motion with a Khuk but you never know. I thought that the rings were really there for practical reasons.

Read post #6. Yes. It is a worry. Only remove the ring when absolutely necessary as it serves as an index in your palm. There are, however, models such as the M43 that come with no rings, so its not written in stone.
