The handle on my 15" Villager seems small for my hand. My ring finger falls on the ridge around the handle - if I choke back the flare of the handle digs into my hand on impact, if I choke up my hand is right against the front edge.

My question is, are the handles larger with the larger size Khukri's or are they all a set standard size?

I could sand down the ridge, but if there are larger handles I would rather just go that route (besides that 15" Villager could then be a good Christmas gift for my little brother.)

Thanks.

My larger khuks have larger handles. My Chiruwa AK (16.5") had a large handle I had to sand down, while my 12" Badune has a very small handle. The Salyan Special I just returned had a handle in between. The KH knives are the same way. My experience is limited to those knives. These others will have seen countless Khuks. I mean dozens each. Where do they store them?

Andy has it right: the sizes vary a lot, both based on the overall size of the khuk, and the kami (maker). Kumar tends to make pretty big handles. Course, if you order one, you will find that that was they day he was making small ones. Kamis are like that.

The handle flare is often too sharp for my liking. I've rounded them off a bunch of times. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again, especially to a villager.

On a 15" khukuri, I put my thumb on the angled part of the bolster. It also helps the khukuri from sliding forward whilst chopping.

My hands are small but I can use the same grip on a 12" khukuri.

Until quite recently, every handle seemed to need some work to be user friendly. The butt plates were always too big and needed filing down, the handles were bigger than the bolsters and needed working down - and by then the rings and grooves needed to be re-shaped. Then the whole shebang needed sanding, and if wood - stain and oil finish. If horn, a 4/0 steel wool finish and a long soak in olive oil. Brass or white metal sanded and re-polished with 4/0 wool, whew...

Lately they seem much better fitted, I have a couple that didn't need anything at all. So progress is being made. Now about cho-creep:D
