I have a Model 3-5 with a leather handle with a duralumin buttcap w/thong hole and the cap has become loose. The knife is a couple of years old and has never been used. The cap shows no space between it and the spacers and the nut is not loose but the cap can be rotated a few degrees to the left and right.

Would some kind of leather conditioner such as lexol or maybe Snoseal swell the leather enough to tighten it up?

I think that your best bet is to contact the shop, and ask them how to proceed. My guess is that they will advise that you return the knife, and they will fix it.

At least, that is what I would do if I were in your shoes.

Thanks for the reply Lunde. In more prosperous times this would be my choice also but my financial situation mirrors an Oklahoma farmers in 1932.This knife was a gift from my father and will never be sold so I really do not care if I have to get out a nut driver and tighten the nut on the end of the tang(even though it might mar the finish)and then try to polish it because though it has not been used yet it will in the future.I am hoping that warming the handle and putting some Snoseal on it will make it tight again and if not then the nut driver comes out.

Dogtownhootie, I believe the only cost to you would be the initial shipping charges to the shop. Since it hasn't been altered in anyway, and was your fathers I believe they would repair it free of charge. Ken is correct, you should contact Randall directly and they will probably tell you the same.

Dan,thanks for the advice I believe I will take you and Lunde up on the advice and e-mail the Randall shop and see what they have to say.

I sent an e-mail to RMK and asked about cost to have it fixed at the shop and also asked for advice on fixing it myself.I will post about the reply when I recieve it.

I have had two Randalls with bad (non-functional) compasses, and the shop fixed them both times by replacing the compass, and my only expense was shipping to them.

The shop replied that they would be happy to tighten the nut and would only charge me shipping and ins.I had asked about tightening it by placing the blade in a padded vice and using a nut driver and they said I had the right idea and to use a light leather conditioner on the leather if the knife is not used regularly. They also said if I chose to do it myself to ship it to them if I have any problems.

I fixed it myself and did not have any trouble and no scratches sinced I taped off the cap around the nut.It only needed about a half a turn of the nut and did not make the end of the tang protrude to a noticable degree.
