Can anyone explain or detail micarta scales? What is micarta made of? Why does it seem to only be used in more expensive or custom knives?

Nowadays, Micarta is a trademark owned by Norplex, and can have other compositions, but traditional Micarta is composed of paper, linen, or canvas, saturated with a phenolic resin and hardened with heat and pressure. As for why it appears on certain types of knives is that FRN is cheaper and the tactical crowd prefer G-10 and CF. Which is funny in a way, because traditional Micarta has one very interesting trait, it feels slick when dry, but develops traction when wet, especially when wet with blood.
