In a discussion with one of my favorite knifemakers,it was said, that,if both sides of a knife handle did not match,it gives you two different views of the same knife.I recently purchased a knife, with Gorgeous stag, but it is not perfectly matched.I cannot make up my mind,as to the two view theory,or does it look funny. What do you think about this? I DO NOT wish to mention knifemakers names,so please,do not ask.I will tell you this, they both are well known, and I love both thier knives. Any comments will be appreciated,Thanks,Vince

With natural materials I don't expect both scales to match looks wise, but I wouldn't want them to be shaped differently. I would want them to be symmetrical.

Kieth,They are matched like that,"symetrically",very perfect, too. But one side has a little amber hue,on the lighter coloration,of the Burnt Stag, than the other, wich is creamier. This stag is real premium stuff, but make no mistake, flip the knife, and it is "another view" Thanks,Kieth

That's not something that would bother me at all. In fact I have a couple of knives that have stag that is a different colour on one side than the other. I have never thought of it as having two different views of the same knife.

Good stag is very hard to get, let alone match well. I wouldn't sweat it.

A perfectly matched set of stag scales is a beautiful thing though.

Keith with stag being non symmetrical by nature I concentrate on white base colour match, surface texture, surface colour, sufficient white base thickness to prevent the center spongy material showing and lastly I will bias the handle based on owner preferance. Convex scale on the palm side and the concave scale on the opposite side. This turns the natural non symmetrical nature of the stag into a plus.

Premium stag is available from old inventories that were put aside before the embargo. I was one of those who invested in enough inventory for my own use until the embargo eventually is lifted. I do not sell to others though, just my own customers.
