Handle Size for abnormal large eye

Hello,

I'm trying to hang an older Hults Bruk 4.5lb head, but having a difficult time finding a handle that will fit the eye.
When measured with micrometer, eye size is 2.8in (top), and .984in (top) width, 1.035in (bottom) width.

House handle has a Picaroon handle that is 15/16 (.9375in) wide and 2 9/16 (2.5625in), this is the largest eye I could find that still an curve handle. Would you think this would work?

Or if you know of another place that may have a handle to fit.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mario

The route I would take personally would be to pick up a longer handle from House Handle or another handle company that leaves absurdly large shoulders on their handles. What you can do then is create a new shoulder lower on the handle and a tongue that will fill your eye. Of course this will only work if you get a say 36" handle and want it to end up around 32" or so. If you want a longer handle then it could be a problem.

That said the Pickaroon handle would probably work well. House tends to leave plenty of material on the tongue of their handles as well so chances are it would fit anyway. If not then just drop the shoulder and make sure you at least have a solid connection at the bottom of the eye, the wedge will fill in the top.

Is it oval or normal axe eye shape? I hung an old old head with the large oval eye on a double bit handle. Then took down the shoulders down to make it look like a straight single bit.

It is common for European makers to oversize the eyes for use with Birch, Beech and Ash. Perhaps you can track down a handle supplier on the other side of the pond.

Thanks for the advice Hacked, this will probably be the way I go if I cannot find a handle over seas as 300Six stated. I will start looking in the UK, thank you.

.30wcf, it is tear drop shaped. Although that straight handle looks really good with that head. I could go this route too.

Thanks,
Mario

You can order an unguaged eye on an axe handle from House Handle. Call and ask. I've done a couple heads with oversized eyes that way. Plenty of wood to work with.
