Hey Hogs,

I've got a NMSFNO that had been stripped by the previous owner, and I want to remove the G10 scales and give the whole knife a nice satin finish.

My questions are:
Where can I obtain new tubes, and is there and advice you can lend me on reinstalling them?

Do I need special dies, or is there a cheaper DIY alternative? I own a bench vise.

Brass, aluminum or stainless tubes?

Thanks in advance.

I use a 1/2 ton press, I'd suggest a 1 ton or more to make life a bit easier. I use a cheater pipe on the handle and can crush even my heaviest walled tubing but little stronger press will give you better control, arbor press is cheap. One issue I had to deal with on mine, those flaring dies fit the ram, but the baseplate I got doesn't have a 3/8" slot so I made a support plate to hold the bottom die from 1/2" plate and drilled a 3/8" hole with the drill press.

Hey, I just noticed the links in Inkynates post from Busto- OnlineMetals is where I get my tubing. I'm lucky though, there's a warehouse in Toledo where I can pick my stuff up. I order online in the morning and by noon I get an email with "order filled ready for pickup" ~ gives me an excuse to leave work early so I can make it by 5:00. I ask for the "cutoff nominal lengths" cheap as hell. I use their precision tolerance tubing mostly in 316SS. A while back I picked up some assorted packs of G10 liner material off Amazon. Is there anything you can't get on Amazon? LOLO!!! got my press from there too.

Nydoc on here has some experience with replacing the flared tubes, I think. He did a very nice job on a cgfbm of mine that he worked over, though I think he used steel in place of the brass.
