handle wrapping

You may want to go ask that question either on swordforum.com or swordforumbugei.com . There are some very knowledgeable people there. The technical term for this craft is tsuka maki, so by doing a search, you may find some stuff on the net. I know I've seen some drawings in the past.

The instructions to disassemble a katana handle found here may provide some insight on how the handle is originally assembled.

You might query Fred Lohman if he knows of a book or online location with instructions for wrapping a handle. lohman@katana4u.com His site is an informative place to wander around for nihonto info. http://www.japanese-swords.com/pages/about.htm The secret to using the drop-down menus on that page is to place your mouse cursor in the space to the right of the words (label) in the desired menu box.

From Fred's site:
The most frequently asked question is: HOW MUCH CORD DO I NEED?

OUR FORMULA: Measure the length of your handle, convert the 'inches' to 'feet' and add 4 feet of cord to the 'inch length' of the handle. In other words, an 8 inch handle will need 12 feet of cord and a 9 inch handle will need 13 feet, etc.
