Handles for Straight Razors

Hi Gang,

I've got two old straight razors here. They are pretty neat, but the handles are shot.

Does anyone here do handles for such items? I'd sure like to have some nice wooden or micarta ones put on these babies. Any help would surely be appreciated.

I made one out of moose antler once. Don't have a pic of it but then it wasn't anything spectacular anyway. All I did was cut a slot in one side of the antler and all the way through on the pivot end about half way down the handle. Then sanded it out till the blade rotated smoothly, and then just buffed it slick. Not really something you'd want to be dipping in water all the time, but it was just something different I wanted to do. I wouldn't reccomend wood for a handle if you plan on using the razor.Paper micarta would be real nice for looks and using. Do the blades need any restoring, like buffing or sanding at all?? Take care! Michael

L6,

The blades do need some touching up, but I don't know how much on one. It is an old Wade & Butcher from Sheffield England. On the blade is written "Wade & Butcher's celebrated Fine India Steel Razor". I really didn't want to wipe that off, that's one of the great things I liked about it.

I don't plan on using them, just want some handles back on them.
