Folks I'm seriously considering getting my 8 y.o. an Izula for Christmas. He has a few pocket knives and a couple of Bark Rivers. But I think the Izula would be a great size for everyday outings and such. My question is does the handle make that much difference? Not sure if I should get him the handle or just let him wrap it with cord. Being an 8 y.o. he always thinks cord wrapped knive look "cool". Sadley to say the only ESEE knife I own is my 4.

Only thing I would consider is that sense he's young the hard metal or the cord might be a little rough on his hands... Then again, you've got to build callouses up eventually.

I would say that paracord would be enough for him to hold on to though, and since he likes the looks of it he should appreciate it. You can always get the scales if he doesn't like the grip.

Yep have to toughen up those hands.:D Dont want him being a sissy.

dad get him the handles, if they're to big (which I doubt) for him at his age, then leave them off til later..

If and when he wants to wrap it, make SURE you tape the edge for him and sheath it, to many people have been cut wrapping it..

I have one with handles and let me tell you it makes it a completely different knife..

btw, its not sad you own just the 4 its a 'great' knife..

If you're talking about the regular Izula I'd go with a cord wrap. I hate the "bikini" handles. I would personally choose the Izula II with full handles.

If he's ready for it (understands blood circle, cutting away, basic blade safety, etc.) the Izula is a great knife for smaller hands, too!

I would encourage him to try wrapping the knife himself - make sure it's in the sheath!!! Most AntBites posted here are during handle-wrapping activities!

You can always get slabs for it later, too.

Scales for sure. The cool part is that he can remove them. If you let him cord wrap the handle I would highly recommend it NOT be in the sheath and instead wrap the blade in lots of layers of electrical tape.

+1

Be super duper careful if you let him wrap it. Mine was sheathed but popped out when I was pulling the cord tight. Cut the hell out of me.

I think the scales would be ideal for small hands.

When I wrapped my Izula I stabbed it into a table and taped the exposed edge, then I just worked with two hands as it stood on its own.

Thanks for all the imput. I'll look at the Izula II also. Didnt realize there was a difference in the handles on them.

i'm buying Izulas for 2 of the women, in my family. one girl already has one and my 9yr old son doesn't want one.... he want's an ESEE 4 :D

i'm DEFINATELY buying the 2 women scales, for theirs. i figure if they'd rather have paracord wrap, well they can take 'em off. if you're not sure which way he'd prefer, pick the path that provides the most options :)

I was talking about full length handles. I don't have the smaller micarta but I know people like them.. My son just turned 7 last month and he said this handle (knife) feels great!! and of course he wants it, maybe with a little more experience under his belt..

or better yet make it a father-son project and make your own scales !!!

that's my vote - get the plain izzy, cord wrap it for now, and make a set of scales later. (maybe a scout project for his craftsman badge?)

Those are some fine looking scales... I agree with getting some scales for it. I would think this would be safer for the youngin. If the handle ends up to big you can always remove and cord wrap.

Excellent gift idea. I think you should give him the knife with para chord and wrap it with him. He already thinks it looks cool, you will get to spend time with him and teach him at the same time.

i would go w scales. a thin handle for a young hand might twist when he tries to do some heavier cutting. also you can take em off if he doesnt like or need them anymore
