Most of you are like me and appreciate handcrafted stuff so I finally had the time this weekend to get the following together. IF I can get all the pix to post. It's sort of a shop tour of Great Uncle Frank's guitar, violin and mandolin factory. You see what he uses to get the results.

These are specialized tools Great Uncle Frank has made to do the various jobs he needs to do to make an instrument.

Here's some of the files he uses and you can see a couple of other tools laying nearby.

And here's Great Uncle Frank in the shop, cigarette in hand.

Here's a couple of violins made by Great Uncle Frank.

Great Uncle Frank is pointing to something and giving me a lecture about the intricacies of making a violin.

Pretty decent work for a 91 year old -- but I think he made these 15 or 20 years back.

Everything handmade.

So, that's pretty much the story. Pix are worth a thousand words.

If anybody is interested in buying on of Great Uncle Franks violins email me.

Happy Labor Day everybody!!!!

Those are awesome! Thanks for sharing the pics :)

I'm curious what kind of price range Great Uncle Frank sells them for, even tho i'm not a violinist. Handmade stuff is spectacular.

That's a great price, Uncle. We paid more than that for Eric's 12 years ago and it wasn't handmade. Or really great quality when it came right down to it.

I wish I knew a little more about violins, but they look like very nice work. Thanks for posting the pics of the shop. Those home-made tools are excellent! A talented man.
Regards,
Greg

It is nice to see old world craftsmanship is still alive and well! When you think about, that is just the way they have probably been made forever. It would be interesting to hear the differance between one of your uncles and a factory piece. I remember a story on a PBS channel once about the old masters violins sounding so great and how a lot of it was in their varnish. The properties of it were hard to duplicate. Old world abilities still rule!!
:D
