I got the idea for these from a follow forumite's web site. Can't remember who right now, but he's in South Africa. Had some good tutorials too. I had just set up my new Grizzly mini mill and wanted to make something (hopefully useful)and not too difficult. My machining skills aren't any more developed than my knifemaking skills ;) They really do work keeping everthing lined up and parallel to the drill press table.

Anybody else have any other ideas for simple shop made tools that work?

Looks good, Patrick! But what about stability and holding steady? Could you make one leg of each longer and mill it to fit your T-slots? Would that improve safety or just make it more cumbersome?

Take care.

They're very stable, much better (for me anyway) than trying to hold everything steady with a couple of C clamps holding everthing together. The reason I didn't make them to fit the T slots is so I can freely move the knife on the drill press table to drill all the holes.

No, I don't plan on selling them, it took me a long time to make these (I'm slow:))and it would cut into my knife making time! I'd be happy to send anyone the dimensions I used if interested to make your own. Send me an email pprouty@socal.rr.com .

I cut the basic shape on a bandsaw, the drilled out as much material as I could, then finished them off on the mill. I used 11/16" 6061 aluminum plate because I happened to have some, but I imagine 3/4" or 5/8" would work just as well. The important thing is to make sure that the sufaces the steel rests against are parallel to the bottom of the feet. I used an 1/8" end mill to get a tight radius in the top section to keep the overall width to a minimum. I already had the knurled knobs (I'm not sure what they were for, I saw them in a surplus store a few years ago and bought some because they looked like they might be useful someday) they had 1/4-28 threads so I cut pieces of all-thread and siver soldered them together.
