Eye sizes were pretty much standardized years ago. You've got one that is not matched to the size of that head. The store ought to take it back even if it's scuffed a little bit (they'll certainly understand when you show them the axe head) and allow you to exchange it for a proper handle. Good luck. Always take a tape measure with you (or the axe head) when you're shopping! Taking wood off is a whole lot easier than scheming up ways of putting more wood on.

it is a homedepot handle and i scraped quite a bit. they probably wont take it back. i will just mark it up to learning, but do not know where to go for a handle. because these where the only i saw.

Looks like if you were to shape it down heavily you could get the head all the way down to the shoulder of the handle and it would take the gap out, though that wouldn't fix the fact that the top of the tongue isn't going to fit the shape of the eye well even when wedged.

Push comes to shove sand a flat spot on the rear of the tongue, glue a chunk of wood to that in order to enlarge the tongue. Hang from there. Otherwise remember COTS's rule of thumb; if the handle is sitting on a shelf, leave it there.

A full sized head on a 'boy's' handle is not the way to go here. Too much slop. Laminating sounds great until you look at how much original wood is going to be left once you've created flats for gluing. You're better off wrapping the stick with hockey tape to 'take up the slack' before knocking in the wedge. ..and I've never seen that done before, either.

At my Home Depot those handles are only 14$. You might can go on their web site and order a larger handle. Try ACE Hardware as well. Good luck, DM
