Sal,

Have sales increased? Talk about product placement

Hi Fred. We just make certain quantities of models. At this time, we haven't noticed any changes in demand at this time.

Increaing production of a model like the Harpy would take 90 to 120 days and we would have to be sure the demand was there before implementing.

The Civilian is a Special purpose model and we would not be interested in increasing production.

...You will see the increase very soon:
a friend of mine asks me by e-mail where he can find a Harpy, and this week I was visiting a shop in Paris, where two guys came in asking for "hawkbill spydercos..", and on e-bay there is just now people selling a "Hannibal's Civilian"..
Have fun, Sal.

EX ALTO FULGOR

The military surplus store near my house just sold out of Merlins this past week. Big rush! (People shyed away from the G10 and SS because of price. It's funny though, 90 bucks for a knife is cheap for me.) Anyway, in my opinion, this is all the world needs. A bunch of kids messing around irresponsibly with a fairly intimidating looking knife. I hope cops round here start comfiscating them. I would hate to lose mine in some stupid way.
Matt

Quick, somebody write a bestselling novel/screenplay where a normal person uses a "hawkbill Spyderco" to help an endangered child.

My wife did that (help a child, not write a bestseller--too bad; we could use the $$).

Stop when you get to bone.

Thomas Harris is something of a hack, in his techno-fetishisim, witness his portayals of 'Gen III' night vision gear and his Tom Clancy like fixations on gun brands. I think it is almost a compliment that he has chosen Spyderco knives, without really ever saying Spyderco (I assume you didn't let him Sal? did he ever contact you?) means that Spydercos have become the standard... and I don't think anyone would doubt that.

Best,
Todd (edgedance)

In the book Lecter goes to a gun show and buys a Harpy and has to ask the dealer specifically for a "Spyderco Civilian," which he had but was not on the table. The knife purveyor, stereotypically portrayed as a big fat redneck-type, replies:

"Not to many people know about those, I only ever keep one in stock." From reading the book I get the impression that Harris is just a good researcher, and not an actual knife nut himself. He did know that the Civvie wasn't a mass market item though.

I found it very interesting (it kinda made me giddy) when I read Hannibal and came across the Spyderco references. I'm about the only guy "on my block" who knows much, if anything, about knives, let alone brand-specifics like Spyderco. So when I read that Hannibal bought his Civilian and Harpy from "Buck" at a gun and knife show, I immediately thought of the beefy guy I saw at "Buck's Knives," a table that is traditionally at the far left rear of the South Florida Gun and Knife Show at the South Florida Fairgrounds on Southern Blvd. in West Palm Beach. I wonder if that particular Buck does shows as far north as Virginia, where Lecter made his purchases. Anyone know?
