hanshee military use

I was recently asked how long the hanshee was used by either the Nepalese Army or any of the early British Regiments. When I posed this question at the Gurkha Museum no one could give a definite answer so we went into their extensive library and found some information, but nothing in standing equipment or uniform orders. We did find the original of this well published photo which shows the Nusseree Battalion in 1857 (later to become the 1st Gurkha Regiment in 1891). The distinctive hanshee grip is very visible in this photo being held in a traditional scabbard with straps and buttons and a pattern frog. We do know that each regiment and battalion could choose their kukri and frog prior to 1846 so this was quite a surprise. This also means that this unique and rare kukri was made well past the first quarter of the 19thc as believed.

Sorry about no pix. First time and I thought I could now add photos.

JOhn it takes some time to process becoming a gold member. Your tagline under your name still says basic member and until it says gold member you won't be able to post pix.

Hmmm, that should've worked. You can still cut and paste it into your address bar and it should show up.

This web site does not support linking very well. I have had the picture pop up and pop off on this post as I refresh the screen.
