Don Hanson made this Walnut Ozark Hunter for me in 2009. At the time, we discussed doing a scrimshawed inlay, but his wife Tina was not doing much carving at the time. The results of the 1086M steel and Missouri Black walnut were enough to make me happy without the extra embellishment at the time.

Then, after a little begging on my part, I was able to slip a nice piece of ivory into Don & Tina's house and I ask Don to keep it visible so Tina would see it ever so often. ;) :) I told her anything from the Ozarks would work for me, acorn, squirrel, sunfish, turkey tracks, etc. Whatever she wanted to do. Then, last fall Tina informed me she had something for me. Knowing I was an avid turkey hunter, here is the result.

Don was kind enough to tear into our nice walnut handle this week and he got a tremendous result.

Thanks Tina and Don!

Thats very cool Joe. Don mentioned something about this and I was dying to see it.

That looks terrific Joe. The creamy ivory looks great against that warm brown walnut handle and the scrim is not only beautifully done but perfectly color-coordinated with the handle as well! It couldn't have come out any better than this.

Wow, that looks great! The scrimshaw work is amazing, I think it takes a very nice knife to the next level.

As I keep looking at the scrimshaw work the more impressed I am. I haven't ever seen scrim work like before, don is this style just a different extension of the traditional scrim work or is it something completely different?

Thanks for all of the comments. Really happy with the way this turned out. Made a special piece even more so.

I don't know what kind of scrim it is, but Tina is very good at it! Wish she would do more. :)

That is a beautiful thing. Great lines, proportion and the scrim is stunning.

What a package--congratulations, Joe!

(Paul's sheath really tops it off, too--pure class. )
