Hey guys... I'm new to this forum and have read hundreds of threads before but have recently been looking for a high quality khukuri and have found H.I. I must say I'm extremely impressed. I'm looking to get a Hanuman and was wondering if you guys had any comments on the khukuri or helpful advice on my first "official" khukuri.
Thanks :)

Hello John and Welcome.
Several customers love their Hanauman khukuri and use them in the field.
That being said, they are not warranted for such use.

Tell us what you plan to use your khukuri for and how big of a guy you are and maybe we can give you some good recommendations.

I definitely want a field use khukuri (something tough) thought about a CAK. I will probably be delimbing, chopping, batoning, and really a dependable, long-lasting khukuri for long camping trips and survival situations... I'm not a big guy by any means... just a normal 6' dude, but I'm not outta shape
The American norm is becoming bigger and bigger, hahaha

Unlike most HI khukuris, the Hanuman model does not have a tang that goes all the way through the handle and is peened over at the end. That doesn't mean it will fail, since the partial tang construction is common for khukuris used in Nepal, but it's a consideration.

Also, why use a beautiful knife with a polished blade and carved handle for rough field work, when you can get an HI "ugly" KLVUK for that purpose for around $65? Sure you can do it with the Hanuman, but I suggest the KLVUK for long camping trips and survival situations, and if finances permit, also buy a Hanuman to admire and use in less demanding circumstances. If you're not familiar with the KLVUK, they are described in some recent threads in this forum, or do a search on "KLVUK".

If money is not an issue, I would still recommend a CAK, M43 or WWII model for the kind of use you describe above. You can get them in a variety of lengths and weights here on the forum in Yangdu's DOTDs. If you buy from the HI web site the choices are more limited.

Thanks for the advice... something I didn't really think about... when and where is the dotd's? And sorry for being naive but what does "KLVUK" stand for?

Thanks guys... I guess I'll be here Thursday :)

KLVUK: Keshar Lal Villager Utility Knife. Keshar Lal is the kami who makes them. It's a recent, no-frills model that has become very popular here among forumites. You can see from the photos that it is just begging for the kind of hard use that you describe. The lengths and weights vary somewhat (usually 15-17" overall length and maybe 18-24 oz weight). Good size/weight for packing, unlike some of the very heavy blades, but strong enough to do almost anything.

DOTD (Deal Of The Day) is not just Thursdays. It can be any day (usually two or three per week, though lately it's been a bit less. Basically it's whenever Yangdu wants to offer either overstock or cosmetically blemished knives, or unusual models.

The prices are usually very good, even compared to the reasonable prices at the HI web site. Thing is, you have to keep looking and be fast or some other forumite will beat you to it. The way to order a DOTD is by sending an email to Yangdu, giving your shipping address. First email gets the knife. Yangdu will reply to your email telling you if you got it, and what is the shipping charge (usually $15-20, depending on the size/weight). It is good courtesy to post here on the forum after you send the email, so other forumites know that the knife is spoken for and Yangdu doesn't get lots of unnecessary emails.

Awesome, thanks for that... I like the heavy-duty part of the knife... I liked the hanuman for its aesthetics but as the forumites pointed out you don't want to get one to use you'll regret using and decreasing its aesthetic value. Plus the deals on the DoTD and the question do I have money to spend on aesthetics and more expensive makes? And we all know that answer :/

I have resisted the KLVUK for a while mainly because I figured I already had something in my collection that would do the job. The one in the link below is mine which I received just yesterday. I did have the opportunity to use it yesterday before my wife swiped it from me:D When I first held It I thought it may be a little light but after a few short moments I realized it was not so light but just nicely balanced. I was fortunate to pick this one up for a mere $40 because it was a blemished sample (I couldnt tell). Something nice about being able to just wipe the blade down with mineral oil or something and stuffing it back in its sheath. As far as this being a first Khukri for someone I will definitely agree. If you like the KLVUK then you will really have a great respect for quality craftsmanship and finish of the other models if you chose to make a second purchase. But then again If you can spare a bit more change an Ang Khola mirror finished with Kamis' mark is hard to beat!
