Based on the good things I was hearing at the time, my wife got me a Hanwei pattern-welded Godfred Viking sword for Christmas two years ago.
I'm now hearing that many, if not all, had bad heat treating and are basically junk.
I did a Search here and came up with some references, but can anybody tell me definitively if the problem was solved, if it affected all of them, if mine is probably a clunker from two years back, or any kind of a specific cut-off period between Old Junk & New OK?
I wanted a good Viking sword & we thought I was getting one. Kinda pissed if the only Hanwei/Chen product out that's no good is the one I have. I don't want to use it in battle, I just want a good quality serious Viking sword.
Thanks.

Sorry guy, survey says that the heat treat on the old Godfreds was pretty spotty. Some people have had some pretty serious failures.

Try A&A's very hisorically accurate Shifford Viking. Awesome balde around 500 USD. An accurate historical replica like this the Shifford is a pleasure to hold and own, and dispels many myths concerning the size and weight of viking blades.

You might want to check out some of Albion's vikings as well.

on emay or here at BF. Makes fer a nice down payment on the next! One man's junk is another's treasure!

Thanks for the suggestion, Ferrous.
I don't have an ebay account, though, and I can't sell anything here, can I? Or did I misunderstand the Who Does What section?
I'll probably put it on a wall and then look for a real sword.
Very disappointing, though. The other part of the equation is I don't want my wife to know the gift was a clunker. We both thought she did good, and I don't want her to know the truth. She's a sweet heart for doing it for me. DPris

Darned right Dpris, in actuality she DID do good. She bought something from a decent company (and paid a bit for it too) that at least looks decent instead of some awful fantasy piece and if this one wasn't a lemon of theirs you would have a nice piece right now. She's a nice lady and you are a lucky guy.

Triton,
You're right on both counts- she's a nice lady & I'm a lucky guy.
And, it does still look much better than the fantasy wallhangers, so it'll do OK on the wall, I guess.
Just won't use it to repell any Mongol hordes.

I think an easy out for you is to hang the Godfred up on the wall, and then buy another one.

Explain that you don't want to mar the finish on the Godfred, and you are getting a more utilitarian version to play with. An immediate suggestion is the Kris Cutlery version which has had a number of good reviews, and it comes in at about 2/3 to half the price of some of the Albion offerings.

Good Luck,

Sometimes it cannot be helped. One make and model of car can have good years and bad years of manufacture.

My first time on the sword forum but if anybody makes the old style hunting swords I would like to see them. A hunting sword has a pistol on the side generally speaking. Any pictures?
