Can anyone think of anything bad about the Hanwei Practical Katana?I want to buy one,it looks like a good blade.I cannot afford a more expensive sword right know.If you have any other suggestions please let me know.

The worst thing about it is that you are at the mercy of QC when you order one. The way to remedy this is to find a very picky dealer who is willing to inspect their inventory for quality. You will find pieces that cut very well, handle very well, and have surprisingly good fit-finish, but you will also find some disappointing pieces if you are unlucky.

The only real flaw I find in the product in general is the inability to readily remove the handle for maintenance and polishing. However, given the price point of these swords, repolishing or changing fittings and interior cleaning and such aren't really a major problem. For a little more, you can get those elements in the Practical Plus. However, for many people and their purposes, having a "permanent" handle may in fact be advantageous. Really up to you.

I like the handle on the "Plus" better. Rounder, a little longer and fuller. The Tsuba is cut out. Some find this hurts the hand when using in Iaido.:)

There are a few motions that can cause the tsuba to rub against the hand in usage, but for most cutting intentions, most experienced Japanese-style swordsmen don't choke their hands up to the guard like you see when people often pose with swords, so it really isn't that much cause for concern if you are getting it as more of a tameshigiri-inclined sword. Of course that's why you specified "when using in iaido." :D

(off-topic) 888, hope that gim comes in soon! :)
