HAP40 Dragonfly 2 Chipped...!!!

So my HAP40 Dragonfly 2 has a chip a quarter inch from the tip. Only lightly used this knife a few times. Second owner, so does that void any remedy/warranty from Spyderco?
Im a big Spyderco fan and this is my first issue with any of them but geez, its disappointing. I was gonna trade it for a serrated edge which I prefer in their small blades but now its been devalued. 😕👎
Anyone have an issue with HAP40?
Anybody know if I have a chance with warranty being second owner?

The warranty still covers you as the second owner, but what do you want warrantied? A chip in the edge? They don't do that. Is this some big chunk of missing metal or something that will come out after a few of sharpenings? If the latter, then just sharpen it out.

I suspect it would only be covered if the metal was defective, like bad heat treat. I doubt that's the case but you can send to Spyderco and see.
BTW, you devalued it when you used it. Why would you do that if you intended to sell/trade it?

Haven't had any problems with my hap40 blades except they lean to the soft side and tend to slightly roll instead of chip, nothing excessive though.

Of course its devalued some after light use. But not nearly as much as a great condition knife that now has a chip in blade.
As for whyd I used it if I intended to sell/trade it. I didnt acquire it intending to move it. Is it unusual for you to hear of someone buying and using a knife a few times and then deciding to move it? I put it up for trade at another Spyderco site and THEN noticed the chip. Ive since removed the post and will just keep and use it.
Anyways, I can probably sharpen the chip out. I just thought I'd come on the Spyderco subforum and see if anyone's had any issues with HAP40 and possible warranty. Ive had many Spydercos, for many years, and never chipped a one of them. Most of them with a heck of a lot more use than this one's seen. I wasnt really expecting a warranty solution.

That doesn't look like a very big chip. I would just sharpen it out and it will be fine. It looks like you may have come into contact with something like a staple while cutting a box or something.

But to answer your question, I have used my HAP40 blades mostly on food but haven't chipped any yet.

not the best pics but I just sharpened it out. itll be a perfectly fine user...

I think you could still sell it as a lightly used and sharpened knife but I would keep it myself. There might have been a little stressed steel on the factory edge. I doubt you will have any more issues now that you've sharpened it and it really is a great steel. Enjoy.

My Stretch has similar 'chip' (more like minor rolling actually) hitting staplers when cutting some pages off a document. Good thing is it sharpens easier than ZDP (and chipped leas too). Seems uours is ok now .

Even the toughest and strongest steels give way at some point, either by deforming/rolling or fracture/chipping. I find hap40 one of the more resistant to both. At the same geometry, I find 154cm, D2, ZDP189, VG10, s30v, s110v, bd1, 420hc, 440c, to name a few, to be worse, some much worse.

Are we talking maybe $15-20 difference from NIB to used and sharpened? C'mon now.
Put it on the exchange here and see what happens, you might be surprised. Unless you paid an outrageous price for it, I can't see taking that much of a hit.

It's a great steel, just sharpen those chips out. You could also send it back to Spyderco for resharpening--I don't think they charge for that service, other than postage. I'm pretty sure they will regrind it back to perfection. If they found something wrong with the heat treat or whatever, they would probably take care of that too, but I bet it just needs a light regrind. I've used the heck out of my 2 HAP40 knives, a Delica and an Endura. Can't say enough good things about them.

Oops, I see you already sharpened it out. I bet you find it to be more than satisfactory. I would consider myself lucky to have any HAP40 Spyderco, they are getting pretty rare these days.

Thanks for the replies...
I didnt try to sell it I posted a For Trade post somewhere else. THEN...when I pulled it out of my knife case I noticed the chip. Im ok keeping it but realized with the small Spydercos, I prefer a serrated edge. If I decide again to move it itd only be for a Dfly2, Delica, or Salt1 in SE.

I know . . . a chip in a nice knife like this is a disappointment.
I was getting smaller chips than yours from cutting wire ties with my Dragonfly in ZDP-189. I finally learned to not cut wire ties with it. I pretty much have several knives on or with me at all times so I just use one of my dedicated wire tie cutters instead; a Wenger Patriot or Vic. Secretary or a Vic Bantam all reprofiled to very shallow sharpening angle. Counter intuitive . . . I know. Flies through tough ties though. I like the ZDP-189 and the Dragonfly so much other wise I will never get rid of it.

Wire tie killers ( large OR small blade . . . doesn't matter ) :

For cutting most everything else :

Sorry for OT, but I found cutting food on ceramic plates using my SAK (carefully) doesn't degrade the edge badly. I didn't look it under bright light but finger test showed almost no impact.

with the small Spydercos, I prefer a serrated edge.

Two more thoughts :

If you keep chipping it like that pretty soon it will be a "serrated" edge so no prob . . . right ? :)

And I know you removed the chipped steel but after getting some sleep and looking at that first photo again I am thinking it may have been seriously dinged and folded and just looked like a hunk was missing. Any chance that is what happened ? If so a fatter sharpening angle would help it stand up. I have seen that quite a bit in wood working chisels and a wider angle eliminates the problem.
