I just wanted a pocket knife . Found BladeHQ looked at some knives , read up on different locking systems . I finally pulled the trigger on a Hogue EX-01, very little talk about this knife on this forum . I'm now bit by the knife bug and will be buying one for my Son's in the military and Son in law is a police officer. May go auto for them EX-A01 . The knife is built like a tank , strong lockup and I'm surprised it doesn't have more interest on the knife like other top brands .

We talk Hogue's here.

While I'm not a fan they make good knives that will last pretty much forever. IMHO if I'm looking for a "tank" folder I'm going to buy Cold Steel because of the lock and if I want an auto AFO's are my go to so for me they just don't don't do much for me. Having said all that it a great American made plunge lock folder, there's not much more you can ask for.

One thing more you could ask for is the lock-switch design. The EX-01 only has a liner plate surrounding the lock-bar, pivot, and blade stop. Under abuse the secondary switch can fail in the scale. The Gerber Propel (which, iirc, came out before the Hogue) isn't the same class but is also US made and that switch is protected from failure by the steel liners. You might consider getting yourself a Propel to compare the Hogue against. That's really important with knives - you need to have multiples so that you can compare and contrast them :)

Thanks guys for you fast input . I'm enjoying the forum and my new interest in knives . I'm a rifle benchrest shooter that doesn't shoot in the cold weather so this is my cold weather forum . Since I bought my first pocket nife that has the thumb studs to open the blade , I've played with this knife so much I cut my finger in the same place and wore a notch in my thumb nail . Time and technique will correct this I'm sure . Have you guys gone through this with your new toys .

wore a notch in my thumb nail
yes I continually wonder why my thumb nail has that weird notch ?
Is there something wrong with my genes ? ? ? ?
Why does my thumb nail always kind of split right there if I don't keep the nail really short ? ? ? ?
You just reminded me it is from opening my nail nicks.
Thanks

Yes there are many knives I really like that I have just never seen here in the forums.
Ever !
Sure some are inexpensive but by great designers working with production knife makers.
Such as the Chill and the Strobe
Then if I post it I get some comments like "yeah I got one of those it's good".

IdnOh
Guess I'm off to look up those knives that were mentioned.
Hope I don't like them (I'm out of money :p).

Wowb
The dead give away was the pocket clip , now it's the thumb too. Glad I Helped . Thanks for chiming in.

Has one, sold it. I did not like the balance of it. Lock good, steel good, deployment good, & handle material was good. Now the Hogue Doug Ritter...

I had an EX-01 briefly. Good knife, too big for my tastes. Hogue is a great company.

I have their grips on my 1968 S&W model 10
And the Exploit OTF clipped to my pocket.

I too know the thumbnail wear that comes with certain kinds of studs. Sure, you can slow-roll a knife open with your thumb but it's so much more fun to flick it out. At least for me, that usually means getting a thumbnail up under the stud.

Between that, a little arthritis creeping into my thumb joints, and some nerve damage from an accident a few years back; I've largely given up on thumb studs. I've fallen in love with flipper tabs. Usually, flipper tabs are actuated with the trigger finger and when done right, it's a wonderful thing. With some handle shapes, I find myself actuating the tab with my thumb. It's a bit like using a lighter. A lot of front flippers are comfortable that way too. It's a much smoother motion than flicking a thumb stud upwards and it's a lot easier on the joints.
