I picked up a Spyderco Pacific Salt last week so here is a short review followed by a request for more info.
For those not familiar with it, it is essentially a Spyderco Endura with a modified sheepsfoot blade of H-1 steel.
First, the shape of the PE blade is a great all around shape. It has plenty of belly for slicing, is sturdy in the spine, and has a good point at the tip. The large opening hole is also a nice touch.
H-1 steel is supposed to be nearly impervious to corrosion, which is the main reason I got it. Needed a knife that can be exposed to plenty of sweat and gunk without pitting or anything. As far as I can tell, this thing will not stain or pit. Also, every piece of the knife is advertised to be able to stand up to prolonged exposure to salt water without dammage. Very nice.
It came sharp and with a little stropping on some cardboard it shaves easily now. And to my surprise it has seen plenty of daily use but hasn't needed sharpening so far. This was a happy surprise, because I was not expecting very good edge holding from this steel. My experience is that it is definitely superior to AUS-6. I was also expecting it to take a very toothy edge, but after hitting it with the cardboard the edge is really smooth.
So, for anyone that has experience with a Salt (or other H-1) what do you think about it? Edge holding, ease of sharpening, blade geometry, overall performance? I would really like to hear what other folks think and have experienced.
