Received a box -o-goodies from Uncle Bill on Thursday, and hadn't had a chance to extol the virtues of the most excellent Nepalese cutlery.

I received an 18" AK and an 18" Sirupati, both by Bura. Uncle graciously sent these as replacements for two that had not passed muster. These, however, are a different story!

The 18" AK:

I took both Khuks into the backyard to give 'em a test hop on a dead plum tree. I didn't know how tought a dead fruit tree could be, but, never fear, Mr. Ang Khola showed it who was boss. The scarey sharp blade bit deeply and consistently into the wood. Not a bit of damage, or dullness. I actually think it was sharper afterword. I now see why this design has such a rabid following! (BTW this is the type Anthony Hopkins used in Bram Stoker's Dracula--watched that last night)

I did experience the ring ( This one being girthier) on the handle digging into my mitt. I later took care of this with sand paper.

The stats on the AK:
28 0z.
18 1/4 overall
3 3/4 Drop
1/2" spine
2 1/4" at the widest part of the blade
Satissal handle

Interesting buttcap on this one was about 3/32" to 1/8" thick. This is much heavier than any other Khuk I own. It compliments it nicely.

Scabbard usual nice job by the village sarki and the K&C were nicely done and uniform in size and handle appearance.

Overall an excellent rig superbly done by Bura.

The 18" Sirupati:

I tested the lighter Siru on the same dead tree. though not as heavy or sharp a blade as the AK, It performed very well. It limbed with better control than the AK, but It was much more labor intensive with the larger parts of the tree. I can see how this design would be popular with martial artists. The light weight and nuetral feel lends itself to fast strikes.

The stats of the Sirupati:
19 Oz.
18" Overall
2 7/8" Drop
3/8" Spine
Blade is 1 1/2" at its widest
Dark satissal handle.

Usual excellent scabbard & K&C

I am very grateful to Uncle Bill for the way he does business. In this day and age of Customer "Dis" Service, where you practically have to kick in doors to get satisfaction, Himilayan Imports has no peer in making the customer happy.

My thanks to Uncle, Yangdu, Pala, Vikash, and, of course, Bura for my two newest additions.

I'm very pleased to see field reports getting back to normal and many thanks for kind words.

Good review. I as well just got a triangle box from Reno.
I love my 18"AK!!! Cant wait to test it out.

Bill is one of the few people you wont ever have to worrie about returns and or problems with in a online transaction. After do a bit of readign on the forum I have found him to be a man of integrity, grace, and compassion. A rare thing these days. The first of many transactions was handled smoothly and quickly.

Hear that report Uncle Bill? I told you I had a couple that were doing that? My Bura AK sure maintains its edge that BAS and 18" Siru. Now I think 20" by Bura seems to be doing even better.
After the initial touch up I put the chakma away and I don't know when I'll have to use it if at all. Probably if I get some small ding or something, but that is no falt of the blade. That's the dummy on the hendle.:D

Is the 18" Ak a popular model or quickly becoming one? I've been seeing a lot of posts about 18" AKs recently. Or maybe I'm just noticing them because I just got one. Seems to be a good combination of length and manageable weight.

Popularity goes in cycles. Right now we can't keep any M43s or Chitlangis. AKs always sell well -- chopping performance factor.

Yes, Indeedy, the 18" AK is a great lopper and chopper!:D

(Here comes the part where I stir up trouble---;) )

The Baby Ganga Ram Special ( BGRS) runs neck in neck with the AK. If you've got a 18" AK, You definately need to get a BGRS to "Conduct a viable comparison"  :D !!!
