.... a warm puppy who will ultimately become your best hiking buddy, hunting partner, and home companion.

Well, I've finally picked out a puppy; it will be about a week before I meet his breeder in Amarillo to pick him up. He's a male Rhodesian Ridgeback, and I have decided to call him "Dingus", which is South African slang for "whachamacallit".

Here is Dingus at 6 weeks old,

and again at 8 weeks.

The sire of the litter is called "Bruiser",

and the dam is Kira,

Both parents are involved in coursing and have been shown to have strong hunting instincts. Dingus is the largest and most rambunctious pup in the litter; past experience has taught me that the dogs whose company I most enjoy are always the ones that have these traits.

Looking forward to many happy times on the trails of life.

Bwray, I'd had a friend who'd own a R. ridgeback. We'd all had to protect our coffee cups on that low coffee table when 'Taylor' walked in. He was a friendlt doggie ! :). He waggles his long tail which is like a whip. Swept all the coffee cups with the low coffee table. :)

And that doggie , as big as they are, attacks from behind, even through play, shows that they were breed for hunting lions for purpose. :)

Another RR trait you have to watch out for is that they are world class "counter surfers". Leave any food out on the counter and you can color it gone.:(

Neat.

?Search and rescue training?

If nothing else, VERY well-trained dog.

Great companions. I am happy for you. Get a crate. (SteelyGunz keeps his dog in the drier in the laundry room. Seems wrong, somehow.)

Have fun.

He's a cute little dingus. I'm looking now, but the wife says I have to wait till September. It'll be a Boxer, or a Giant Schnauser. I like the GS, but the $ may tell the tale.

That's actually a great idea. Good opportunity to meet other dog owners and participate in a community service activity. There's a local S&R dog unit in Los Alamos that I frequently encounter doing drills on my hikes. Thanks for the suggestion.

Fine looking hound...good luck and a long, happy, relationship with him.

Don't let him eat any Cats.

Just kidding of course. RRs do well with other animals. It's just a matter of socializing them when they are young. Here's a few examples:

Great looking dog, driving me crazy that I dont have a hound right now. I hope you and Dingus enjoy many years of trails and travles together.

Cute puppy!

I've always liked the looks of the RR's

[Thats the first time I heard a Dingus called a whatchamacallit /QUOTE]

"thanks for pm laugh" U.B.:D

What a great looking pup. You have a a swell friend, but a big responsibility on your hands. I don't need to tell you. But I will tell you this... Please... Neuter or spey. Unless you are willing to take on the serious and costly job of breeding. And suffering through your dog's frustrated sex life and related pains.
Here's my loves:

Nice pup anyway . Looks solid .

Actually, the South African name is spelled Dinges but pronounced Dingus. Alternate definitions are "thingamabob", "wotzit" and "doodad". Sort of fits in with my "thingy" tradition for dog names. My previous dog was a pit bull called "Doodle"; we called him "Dude" for short. Obviously, I don't care for pretentious names for dogs. Years ago I had a huge Airedale whose show name was "Lionheart Gladwyn McDuff". We shortened that one to "Duff". I seem to have a thing for "D" names.:D

I've heard a lot of good things about Boxers. Here's a website on bulldog breeds that I explored while trying to decide what I wanted.:)

Looks like a really neat hound! I love dogs! CLoser to ours than my children.... well .... yeah, that's right. My grown, confused, adult children who are beginning to get grey hair, but that's another story.

I compute that if one year of dog life equals seven years of human life, then I am 438 years old by a dog's standard.

I had a boxer once. Good dog with a tendency to drool.

Thought about getting a bulldog, but heard that they were all artificially inseminated and the females had to have C-Section to give birth because their hips are too narrow. Don't know if this is true or just an urban legend.

A friend has one and the bulldog does fart an awful lot (well, gets blaimed for it) and has an awful time getting down steep stairs due to his size and very forward center of gravity.

I am nuts enough to think about getting a Sharpei.

For you with pit bulls and Rottys, my insurance company has just passed a directive that anyone having one of these dogs very likely could have their homeowner's insurance cancelled. Thank you Safeco!

Now my favorite dogs are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Good for about nothing but love and companionship.

One other very important thing: my wife Anne suffers from Maniuere's Syndrome, a form of extreme vertigo brought on by movement and stress. Cavaliers are like a stress sponge. They sense it coming on and run to Anne, if they are not already camped out in her lap, and the stress just flows away.

They travel with us everywhere, even on planes. Anne would not be able to get on a plane without their being there. Often another passenger will be having a 'fear of flying' problem and they will do their best to get to that person.

We had them certified as "Service Dogs." They can and do go anywhere we go. The only place they are prohibited is in a surgical environment.

You bet on the neutering. Breeder says wait 'til 18 - 24 months because RRs mature late.

P.S. Your pet photo had my wife ooohhhing and aahhhing. She's a basset fancier.
