Well, my new year is starting off like most.

Today I was out core drilling in mid Missouri. It was between 10 and 20 degrees with winds upwards of 20 mph. Not much knife work to be done, but being outside is nice...even in less than ideal conditions.

So I'm back in the hotel laying around playing with my newest CRK, a 21 tanto with Micarta. This thing is simply cool. It does everything I need, but right now I need nothing...I just enjoy looking at it and taking in the crisp lines, the smooth belly of the edges, and obviously, that smooth action. The Umnumzaan just doesn't have the same feel (it just leaps to full lock without even being flicked), the DT 21 is sweet, but it has its own character too (it travels quickly and the layers can be felt as they pass the detent ball), the CPM blade on the tanto is just smooth like toothpaste being squeezed out of a brand new tube.

I love them all, but they all have their own walk and talk. Right now I'm really enjoying the conversation from this tanto. It's nice to have something different, and I enjoy learning the ways this blade behaves differently...even doing the mundane tasks like opening bills (paid them last night before I left home). I can use the front thick blade, or rock the handle up and use the thinner back portion...something different.

For cutting rope or other general uses, it's a lot like a modified wharncliffe....but it's so much more.

Good stuff!

Hope you guys are appreciating things as they are...it's there, you just have to take the time to appreciate it for what it is. It isn't magic, it is far more subtle than that. It's something that takes a certain perception. You could just use it and enjoy it, but there is more here if you know how to find it.

No photos...go enjoy your own;)

You're not making it easy with posts like this for me not to get one. I've almost convinced myself I can't justify having a tanto since my work is better suited for the clip point blades. But now I want one.

Ive always wanted to get the tanto, not much of a tanto fan but I love how chris does it, looks like bob lum. But then I also want to find a regular, and then damascus... Anyway, 10-20 degrees? thats nothing! come to minnesota... -10 ;)

I used to work in northern Michigan. I'm too old for that kind of cold;)
