It's 10 minutes till the drop of the ball in the Big Apple. And I've stayed away from the festivities long enough to be noticed (they're yelling now)....

Guess I know who I rather be with....

Happy New Year.

My 2002 resolution for this forum: To try and not make any more misreportings of fact to all you Lazer-Bat-Blade fans out there.

And a Lazer-Bat-Blade Happy New Year to you also Tony.

Amongst arguments, points of contention, personality conflicts, etc. I will post the first vote for you (Tony) to be a MODERATOR on this "Forum".

I think we can upgrade this Forum beyond most others.., simply from the fact that we now have some very bright people..., that think critically..., take all their knives apart (when feasible)..., and actually have the knowledge necessary to evaluate.

In my professional life.., I honestly could not feel good about moderating on any "Forum" simply because of the hours I work.., but I have to say that Armand seems to be non-existent on here??

Of course that can be for many reasons, and I certainly hope those reasons aren't things related to family problems, etc. Having said that.., Armand contributes nothing to this "Forum" except advertising for his own profit (i.e., Tee-shirts, etc).

That is absolutely fine with me.., except not in this context. For those that will mention Chuck's "Shamless Commerce Division"..., and/or Clay's sheaths..., videos..., blah..., blah..., blah..., it's a mis-conception given they do this "Moderation".., purely for personal satisfaction.

Do they benefit from this Forum????? Of course they do!!! There is no argument there. But Chuck and Clay give way more than they get in almost every instance!

I certainly don't know all the personal dynamics that are going on with all the peple on this "Forum".., and I do hope that nothing in the mainstream of life is keeping Armand from addressing anything.

What I see..., is very simple. Chuck..., Clay.., and Tony..., do thier best to keep up with all kinds of questions. Some are newcomer questions..., some have some depth..., and some are just plain dumb <~~~ it happens :)..., but I never see Armand respond to anything.

That is "OK" <~~~ But not for a "Moderator".

I'll second the nomination for Tony. Happy New Year to all..

2001 was quite a year for the balisong.

BM introduced the 42 in 2000. But, it was a tentative move on their part, a cautious "testing of the waters." You'll recall that there were a lot of problems getting ahold of a 42 as demand well out-paced production. The problem was that BM had under anticipated demand badly. In 2001, BM stepped up production and now most dealers have the 42 in stock most of the time.

In 2001, BM introduced the 43 and the 47. They added the black coated handles. And let's not forget the 49SPL and 49-01 with a technological breakthrough for a blade. I don't know if they shipped any 40Ts in 2001, but it'll be just days into 2002 if not. It's great to have a good trainer. (BTW, 2001 was also the year of the training knife with BM adding three and Spyderco offering two.) BM also announced the 31 with it's breakthrough MIM handles. They'll start shipping those in a few weeks.

In 2000, the 42 was an experiment for BM. The success exceeded their wildest expectations. In 2001, they've poured efforts and resources into the Bali-Song line like never before. Many people look back fondly to the "glory days" of Bali-Song Cutlery and Pacific Cutlery. But I've got to tell you people that these are the glory days for the Bali-Song line. 2001 was the year that the Bali-Song line really made its comeback. Right now, there are several more projects going on at BM. Some of those will emerge in 2002 and I think you're gonna be surprised and delighted. BM and all of the folks at BM who've worked on this, deserve a huge round of applause.

The incredible developments in Oregon City would be enough to mark 2001 as a banner year for balisong knives. But it didn't stop there.

SWAT introduced a whole new line of rather nice balisongs.

Roton suddenly appeared as a company and we all learned to spell Monarch. They shipped a small number of pieces in 2001 and hit some snags. But, I've been in touch with Richard and he remains strongly committed to this project.

A little introduction I've called The Chinese Sidewinder but the charm back into Charming China Cheapie. Quite a nice piece for the price.

Oh, and let's not forget Microtech and Tachyon. What a great new balisong. It's the Swiss Watch of balisongs. The really incredible thing here, though, is that Microtech actually shipped a new product within weeks of the scheduled data and also managed to have a reasonable quantity available. If they'll let him, Mike will turn that company around.

It was in 2001 that we all learned to spell Dobruski... Doghbrewski... Dubroski, whatever, the guy from Brazil.

Our friend Eric Maier (or is it Mayer, or Mayor??? Why can't balisong enthusiasts have simple names like Gollnick?) appeared and started to put nice new handles on our broken balisongs.

Several other custom makers have started balisong projects. I have a little monograph that I wrote for would-be custom balisong makers. I've lost track of how many copies of that thing I've given away this year, and to some really big names.

There are several other big-name manufacturers who started exploring balisong product designs in 2001. I suspect you'll see some additional introductions in 2002 as a result.

The balisong has languished for years as a toy for children or as a prop for kickfest action flicks. But, in 2001 the balisong regaining respect as a legitimate form of folding knife.

Why?

Well, quite frankly, a lot of it has to do with this forum. When we started this little experiment, a lot of folks were openly skeptical. But, quite frankly, you people have impressed the cutlery world with the enthusiasm you show and with the level of discourse you maintain here.

2001: it was a banner year for balisongs.

2002: If you haven't already done so, fasten those seatbelts. I suspect it's gonna be an exciting ride.
