Happy Birthday, Sophia

When I was in my mid-teens, they were shooting the film, "Houseboat" with Cary Grant and this new Italian sexpot, Sophia Loren, in the Washington, DC, area. The houseboat set, itself, was down on what was then called Smoot Bay, a very rural piece of inlet off of the Potomac River just across from Alexandria, Virginia. Today, it is where the Woodrow Wilson Bridge connects to the Maryland shore, but it was really quite secluded and rural back then. But is was not secluded from those with bats and my older brother had an outboard motor boat and we used to go down towatch them shooting some of the scenes. I saw Sophia Loren at that time and fell in love with her. She was then, and still is, one of the world's most beautiful women. She has the most incredible eyes.

Someone said that women in the world can be put into two groups .Sophia in one group and all the others in the other group !!

I think that Sophia Loren has naturally inspired a lot of desired plastic surgery options, these days. Her full lips, beautiful eyes and her overall zoftig layout were desired then and are desired now.

When I was in high school in the early '80s I had a poster of Sophia Loren on my wall, a still from "Boy on a Dolphin." Most of my friends had bikini posters or playmates on their walls and ridiculed my black and white poster of some "old chick." I thought then, and still think, that she had more sex appeal in her face than most of the pin ups of the time had with most or all of their clothes off.

Unfortunately a lot of the movies she was in were not so great IMO. I did like "El Cid" though.

Get the tape of "Man of La Mancha". The movie is of an off-Broadway musical play from the 1960s that had an incredible run. It was based upon Cervantes' Don Quixote and Sophia plays Aldonza/Dulcinea. i doubt that she did the singing, but her acting is just superb. Peter O'Toole plays the Quixote role and is his usual very professional self.
