I think it is an excellent idea but no replacement for my idea in this thread.

Not as far as fighting goes anyway.

I do like it and will probably buy one in the future though.

Hell, it might even pass muster as a FLASHLIGHT instead of a KUBOTAN on an airliner!

I've got a problem with my keys and the koppo stick. When I strike, they come back and dig into my hand. I've practiced on a heavy bag and can't seem to figure out a way to hit without the keys coming back and biting me. Maybe I've got too many keys on the ring but I would hate to have to carry 2 sets of keys. I've tried different size key rings. Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

I think if it is bothering you that much, take the keys off when you practice. The weight difference and feel is not going to be that different.

On the street, your own keys hitting your hand are going to be of no real consequence.

cbgold,

Try reversing your grip, putting your keys at the bottom of your fist. That way, when you perform a hammerfist strike, the keys won't bounce off your knuckles. Try it, you'll like it!

This also opens up other possibilities, varying your grip. Try holding the Koppo with your first two fingers instead of the middle two, extending the point and leaving your keys in the palm of your hand, and vice versa, with the keys extended and the last two fingers in the cord loop. Hooking/Pallasoot moves work well with the bottom point/keys extended out, and jabs/thrusts work very good with the point/keys extended from the top part of the fist.

And then there's leaving your hand open, keys either hanging off from the bottom or top part of your hand. Chin jabs/tiger claws to the face work great, plus this allows you to grab clothing/skin/hair at the same time, and then you can dig either end into your opponent's body and apply pressure. Hurts like a MOFO!!

Experiment with all the different grip types, and you'll find the answer!

Mr. Rearic,

Agreed about the fighting part...The JSP Koppo Stick can't be beat in the pocket stick category.

How come? Am I missing something obvious, in thinking that, for the most part, a stick of the right size should perform any technique about the same? I do see the advantage of the koppo's cord giving more security-of-grip, though it may have been necessary given the koppo's smooth finish and smaller diameter. And of course, the koppo's better materials justify a higher price, though shouldn't affect practical usage. So, why else is the koppo a better choice than, say, a kubotan, or even the ASP mini-baton in the first pic Don posted?

I occasionally carry one of the ASP OC mini-batons. I'm very interested in hearing about any advantages of other sticks. I do see the obvious advantage that JSP's sticks are nicer looking and made of more expensive materials than other sticks.

Thanks!

Joe

For me the advantages over a regular kubotan type device are:

-smaller diameter = better penetration

-better reliability over the ASP P-9 (no need for maintenance on a piece of Ti.)

-more secure key ring attachment than some polycarbonate models

-The paracord allows you to have it in your hand while grabbing a BG and you don't have to worry about dropping it.

-the paracord also allows a more positive thrusting motion (this baby is not going to slip under heavy contact)

-Ti is cool

-JSP stuff is top notch

-It's the "Don Rearic Signature" model (it may appreciate over time)

-it's more fun to twirl than a regular kubotan

cbgold,

On my pocket stick/kubotan/yawara/etc. I have a small split ring attacked to the pocket stick and then a second ring attached to that for my keys. This is just long enough for me to have the key ring under my thumb when holding the stick in a fighting grip. It keeps them from bouncing around and smacking me.

Don, you DA MAN!

I got mine last week and love it. The bead blast finish fairly eats light but isn't abrasive to hands or pockets. The keyring hardpoint is far more durable than a Kubotan, and hard as I may try, rarely do I drop the thing.

I'm glad you like it. I see no negatives to it accept some possible stink raised with some in Law Enforcement who might think it more Brass Knuckle Category than "Kubotan" category...but, some of them get pissed at the sight of a Kubotan as well.

It is pricey, but worth it I believe. Mine is my constant companion.

I almost had a chance to use it last weekend too. Another tragedy averted.
