I have been hanging around the Forums for a long time, but never posted on the Spyderco board. I am happy to say I now have a great reason to do so!

A few weeks ago, after waiting a long time to pull the trigger, I received a Spyderco Kiwi. I had always admired the design of this knife as a great blend of old and new elements and materials, but never got around to buying one.

Well, shame on me! This little baby is wonderful. Fit and finish is incredible with everything lined up, free of tool marks and shiny! :p

The blade was very sharp right out of the box, requiring no attention from me. It has cut like the dickens since then, handling all office-related tasks with ease.

It carries very comfortably in my left front pocket, and everyone who has seen me use it really likes it. That's important for me, since some of the folks I work with aren't as enlightened about sharpened tools as the rest of us.

I also want to mention a Customer Service person at Spyderco named Mike(sorry, I didn't get his last name :o ). He was great fun to talk to, answered all my questions in a friendly and professional manner, and even shipped me a pocket slip when I asked for one. If anyone at Spyderco reads this, he is a keeper!

Sorry this ran so long, but I really like this knife! :D

As I like to say about the Kiwi, "Grandpa's pocketknife just got a whole lot more inetersting!"

Thank you Spyderco.

Glad to see you like your Kiwi, they are great little knives. Your observations regarding their acceptance by folks who are not "into" knives matches mine. One warning though, they may be addictive (or maybe it's just me).

Deacon -

YOWZA! That malachite version looks great. Santa Fe Stone Works?

I am not into the SS (too slippery for me), but am glad to see Spyderco offering new versions of this great little knife.

In fact, if anybody cares, I wouldn't mind seeing this knife beefed up a bit, with maybe a 3" - 3.25" blade. Would make a great companion set! :D

Yes TC, it's from Santa Fe Stoneworks - would never have known they did Kiwis if it wasn't for Sal. They don't show any on their website.

And yes, a larger Kiwi, or an revised "upscale" version of the old SS Rescue Jr. with a PE sheepsfoot blade and bone inserts in the scales like the JB Kiwi would go right to the top of my "gotta have it" list!

The Kiwi is a great little knife. The only problem I've got with mine is that it leaves all of these bare patches on my hairy forearms. I suppose I COULD stop demonstrating just how sharp the blade is by using it on my own arms.

I love the malachite Kiwi. Does Sante Fe Stoneworks take requests?

I think they will do anything you want. They had a Dino bone kiwi at Blade,SWEET!

U812 is correct on both counts, they will make you a Kiwi in any one of the stones or shells they work with. You can either visit their website, check this page:

http://www.santafestoneworks.com/handlelapidary.html

select the material you want, then call them and place a order, or you can call or email them and request a catalog, then order by mail or phone after you get it. I got the impression that they try to keep MOP and Dino Bone in stock, but will definitely do other stones/shells when ordered. The dino bone is $200, anything else is $160. Turnaround on mine was just over two weeks, week to make, week in transit. Only gripes I had were that they only ship UPS (which ivariably means a 15 mile drive for me to pick things up) and that they do not include the little leather pouch that comes with newer Kiwis. Aside from that, they are exremely nice folks to do business with, so I will most certainly be ordering from them again in the future. Meaning as soon as I can decide whether to get the denim lapis, the picasso marble, or go all out and get one in dino bone - decisions, decisions. :D

Thanks for posting the link and info, Deacon! Good looking options for dressing up a Kiwi there.

I'm glad to see my post generate some more positive comments for this knife. The more I look at it and use it, the better I like it.

Now, if we can just get that larger Kiwi made! ;)

The larger Kiwi prototype is named "Kopa." Feel free to start a Kopa support thread to pester Sal...uh...I mean demonstrate your interest. ;)

Seems to me part of its allure IS it's small size. Personally
I've stopped carying large knives in favor of smaller ones
and I am enjoying the hobby much more. Takes me back to the
kid with a pocket knife days i guess.

Santa Fe had some great stuff at Blade - including a Yin-Yang Cricket in pearl!

If you're interested in something out of the ordinary, I'd call them directly. There's so much they can do that's not on the website.
